Torre edificata dai pisani nel 1284 pare su ordine del conte di Donoratico Ugolino della Gherardesca a scopo di vedetta militare, Si teneva in contatto con le altre torri del litorale a mezzo di segnali di fumo e luminosi (specchi e torce).
Della torre originale restano poche tracce, nei suoi pressi è stato successivamente eretto un castelletto.
