La statua, una delle due situata in piazza della repubblica, dedicata Al granduca Ferdinando III è opera dello scultore Francesco Pozzi (1806-1886) che volle raffigurare il granduca con il braccio proteso verso le opere idriche realizzate sotto la sua reggenza.E’ stata iniziata nel 1831 e terminata nel 1837.
Sui bassorilievi incisi sul piedistallo del monumento si possono vedere Ferdinando che sollecita la costruzione del grandioso acquedotto di Colognole fatto da Temistocle Guerrazzi (Livorno 1806-1884) e nell’altro, opera di Cambi Ulissi di Firenze (1807-1895) lo stesso granduca, promotore di arti e mestieri, commercio e industria
